The orchid family have as a rule long-lasting flowers, as long as they are not pollinated. Ephemeral flowers lasting less than one day are more frequent. The short duration is not always conspicuous because of the fast sequence of anthesis. In Sobralia, flowers apparently contain a self-digesting enzyme.
